So I've been a huge lurker/fangirl since this comic went up, and was kinda embarrassed forever to post anything (because I kinda love how insanely talented this community is and didn't want to be mucking up forums with my crappy doodles or poorly composed one-shots. Sometimes).
But then I realized I've had this mix floating around in the back of my head for months and it felt silly not to share so I leveled up and posted it: http://8tracks.com/rhapsodyinalto/run-screaming-through-the-dark
1. "I Want it All/We Will Rock You mashup," Queen feat. Armageddon - cast
Because every hinabn mix should start with Queen or Ludo, it's practically canon. And oh hey
2. "Too Tired to Wink," Ludo - Hanna
But I can't wait for more of this to come my way /
Cuz you take what you get and you try not to think
/ Or am I just too tired to wink?
I am 102% convinced this song was written for Miss Stone by Ludo, because it's just too eerie of a coincidence otherwise. It's more or less how I envision Hanna existed right before the comic started: exhausted, frustrated, fighting the good fight but lonely as hell and still somehow unreasonably optimistic.
3. "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," Cage the Elephant - Lamont & Worth
You know I can't slow down, I can't hold back
/ Though you know I wish I could
/ Oh there ain't no rest for the wicked
/ Until we close our eyes for good
Again, I'm pretty sure this is a canon theme. At the least it's headcanon - it's been circling through the fandom forever as a Lamont and Worth tribute song. It's the kind of song that you can imagine playing in the background as they drink warm beer on top of Lamont's shitty-ass clunker and beat the living crap out of each other, laughing. They live a little too close to that raw edge to ever be comfortable in the way that normal people understand, but it's where they like to lurk.
4. "Sleazy Bed Track," The Bluetones - Conrad/Worth
Your pills have cost too much /
And you can't feel them working any more / So pour them down the sink / And listen to me / All you've gotta do is baby kick off your shoes and lay down / Climb up here with me and let's forget about sleep, and lay down.
Oh Con/Worth. You'll always be my favorite OTP. I blame SpookMouse and Cacodaemonia and Demyrie and DesdemonaKakalose (and the dozens and dozens of lovely fics and art out there on the interwebs). But mainly Spook, who was the first one to make it work and make it memorable. <3<3<3
5. "Sympathy for the Devil," Rolling Stones - Cas & Finas
So if you meet me /
Have some courtesy /
Have some sympathy, and some taste /
Use all your well-learned politesse /
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah /
Pleased to meet you /
Hope you guessed my name
For our favorite prison bitches: because Casimiro is not someone you'd want to meet in a dark alley. Or when he's feeling playful. Or annoyed. Finas grounds him, to an extent, but that's because we haven't really seen him angry. Casimiro may be passion and quicksilver, but Finas strikes me as the type to level cities when he feels they have earned it.
Also there may be a fantastic one-shot floating around about how Cas and Keith Richards get drunk one night and thus a classic was born. True story.
6. "Orange Sky," Alexi Murdoch - Zombie
And here is what I know now /
Here is what I know now /
Goes like this:
/ In your love, my salvation lies
/ In your love...
This song always reminds me of Galahad, though I'm not sure whether it's because it's calm, succinct, or it's fond of orange. Either way, it doesn't really matter. Nor does it matter whether or not you sail the Hanna/... ship or just love their rad bromance, you can't help adoring their relationship. It's devotion and compassion and f*cking awesome and sometimes there are pancakes. 'Nuff said.
7. "In the Glass," OK Go - Ples
Who wouldn't rather be their reflection?
/ But when I got here everything was cold and perfect /
When I got here everything was cold and perfect
/ But oh
/ What have I done, what have I done
/ My God, what have I done...
I remember when the concept of Ples was still being tossed around - a dapper, openly gay character that Veser seemed to enjoy teasing (and so the pairing was instant and unquestioned), who was strangely fond of clocks. Then he actually made an appearance in the comic and everything went to hell rather quickly.
I love the abstraction of this song, and the darker themes it suggests. It seemed to go well with Ples' character, or at least his evil side.
8. "Good and Faithful Servant," The Blind Willies - Adelaide
Keeping us from temptation / With the down home tip of her tongue / Salvation’s never felt as good / This isn’t the first time that she’s come
This song is one of my very favorites - it's slow and sultry as f*ck, which completely undercuts the lyrics and makes them much darker than they first appear. Adelaide always struck me as the kind of monster who loves deception and worship almost as much as she loves violence and winning. She likes it when she is in charge, and takes what she wants. She's not necessarily evil per say, it's just that humans exist on a lesser plane. They're more like toys for her to play with. She doesn't usually break them, and she's smart enough to never cause too large of a scene, but in the end she will do whatever it takes to survive.
9. "Get Me Out of Here," Jet - Veser
I'm sacking the man
cause the man is a thief
/ I'm kicking the plan
before the plan kicks me
/ I'm gonna get me,
get me out of here
Veser has some issues, let's face it. I think most of the time he tries to stay as unattached to people as possible, because they leave or they hurt him. The only good thing that was permanent in his life was Lee, and Lee's gone, and he's going to be all sorts of messed up from that for a while. Veser's a survivor, though, don't worry. It's just gonna take a while before he can trust, well, anyone.
Somebody give that kid a hug, jeez.
10. "Go-Getter Greg," Ludo - Hanna & Veser (trying to pick up girls)
I'm a go-getter guy with a gun on my hip /
I'm just searching for that someone to be firing it!
Veser and Hanna should never be allowed to talk to women. Ever. Veser only speaks in dirty, dirty innuendo and always ends with a drink or a fist in his face, meanwhile Hanna stammers and blushes and breaks things and rambles incoherently. They make the worst wing-men team ever.
But hey, at least they're bonding, right? Right?
(I am also AMAZED no one has written this fic... )
11. "Nothing Without You," Vienna Teng - Lee
Oh, call my name - you know my name /
And, in your love, everything will change
/ Tell me it won't always be this hard /
I am nothing without you
/ But I don't know who you are
Lee, you goddamned hopeless romantic. I'm still mad at you for being so stupidly whipped, but here's a pretty song anyways. Okay? Okay.
12. "Mad World," Gary Jules - 16-year-old Hanna
And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
/ The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had...
Because my heart just bleeds for Hanna, and whatever dark and tragic happened to make him look like this http://vert-is-ninja.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=72#/d2kc7vo
. Seriously, that's not a good look...
13. "Fix You," Coldplay - Zombie & Hanna
Lights will guide you home
/ And ignite your bones /
And I will try to fix you
Because I couldn't just leave Hanna at "Mad World," I had to make it better. So you get a Zombie! Hooray everyone wins!
Seriously, I feel like this could apply to the entire cast, it just kinda depends on the situation. Worth fixes everyone, literally, but it's a little too sentimental for him. Toni also gives the impression that she would be the emotional band-aid our damaged little cast needs, but she also just met the guys and that's asking a lot. Hanna will always be there to help, whether or not you really want it, and while Conrad will probably bitch about how inconvenienced he is the whole time, he's the type to leave a bag of groceries on Hanna's door "anonymously " and let some punk ass teenager sleep on his sofa without question. Veser's probably not the type for emotional talks, but he's got your back, and if that means talking about feelings he'd probably do it. Just don't expect a hug or anything, unless boobs are involved.
I think what I'm trying to say is that for better or worse, they are a strange little family that has formed around and because of Hanna, but are there and devoted nonetheless. Go read Lightwaves, they explain it better.
14. "Do What You Have to Do," Sarah McLaughlin - Conrad
What ravages of spirit /
Conjured this tempestuous rage /
Created you a monster... /
And I have the sense to recognize / That I don't know how to let you go
Because we all know Conrad has the odd Sarah McLaughlin song hidden away on his iTunes, likely on his "I'mTakingABathFUCKOFF" playlist. But really, I feel that while he adjusts a lot better than everyone thinks, he has quiet moments of doubt and regret and angst, he just deals with it on his own time, thanks. This is just for one of those moments.
15. "Stuttering," Ben's Brother - Hanna/Toni
It's been, it's been, it's been, it's been
/ Su-su-such a long time, long time, long time
/ Since anybody touched me, touched me, touched me...
/ So kiss me again
/ Cause only you can stop this stut-stut-stut-stuttering /
Kiss me again
/ And ease my su-su su-su su-su s-su-s-suffering!
For some reason this pairing is NEVER addressed, but it's my other secret OTP. Toni just seems like the kind of girl that is direct enough to get through Hanna's shyness and compassionate enough to give him the chance. She's obviously not going to run screaming at the things that go bump in the night, either, which is a big plus. And it's kinda obvious that Hanna has a huge crush on her, or he would if he thought he stood a chance. And this song is cute like WHOA. Okay, sure, Hanna doesn't stutter, exactly, but I imagine he gets pretty awkward in sexual situations. Or at the possibility of sexual situations. Or, well, even being near a pretty girl.
Thank god Toni is smart enough to see past it and just kiss the bejeesus out of him.
16. "Float On," Goldspot - Everybody!
Alright already we'll all float on, ok. /
Don't worry we'll all float on. /
Even if things get heavy, we'll all float on...
Hanna is maybe sometimes too optimistic. But it's why we love him.
Even if the comic never resumes, I still love this world, and I love the fanbase it's gathered. As long as there's fanfiction, we'll all float on, okay? Alright.
